"MSAs: If You Are Not Considering Medicare’s Interests in Every Settlement, You Should Be"

Tuesday November 9th from 10:30am to 11:30 am

CSIA is excited to announce our November webinar titled "MSAs: If You Are Not Considering Medicare’s Interests in Every Settlement, You Should Be".  We will be hearing from industry experts, Paul Sighinolfi, Beth Hostetler and Ciara Koba.

The goal of this presentation is to share with you why and how you can protect yourself.  With CMS civil penalties looming, it is critical that you protect your company and your clients by insuring that you properly take into account Medicare and their interests!

This vital webinar will provide the fundamentals of the Medicare Secondary Payor Act from the perspective of a Former Self-Insured Defense Attorney and Senior State Regulator. Paul and the panel will explain why, as self-insured employers, the MSP Act is important to you when settling cases, and conclude with a discussion of the available Medicare Set-Aside options.

Paul Sighinolfi, Esq. worked for more 25 years advising self-insured employers. He also prosecuted and defended hundreds of self-insured workers’ compensation cases. During this time he co-wrote a book on Workers’ Compensation, presented at state and national meetings on workers’ compensation topics and served on the editorial board of a publication devoted to advising employers on employment and workers’ compensation matters.  He became the Executive Director and Chairman of the Maine Workers’ Compensation Board and has served on the boards of the IAIABC and SAWCA.

During these experiences he developed a concern about injured workers settling cases and their lack of understanding of the post-settlement consequences. He specifically became concerned about issues associated with Medicare Set-Asides and their interplay with the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Beth Hostetler oversees all aspects of Medicare compliance as they relate to the settlement of Workers' Compensation claims and necessary reporting to Medicare. She developed all internal policy for management of Albertson's claims in this regard and manages and maintains all vendors who assist in this process, including MSA vendors, structured settlement brokers and professional administrators. She also provides internal training to staff regarding Medicare compliance.

Ciara Koba is a Principal at Allan Koba Compliance Solutions and Past President of The National MSP Network (formerly NAMSAP).  She is an experienced attorney and nurse with a demonstrated history of working in the law practice industry. She is skilled in Medicare Secondary Payer issues, Medicare/Medicaid Recovery, Medicare Compliance, auditing, Medicare Section 111 Reporting, licensing, appeals, Workers Compensation, healthcare, liability and insurance law.

The webinar is free to CSIA members and available for $25 to non-members.  You can register here.
